As an experienced Rochester Divorce Attorney I am often asked about marital property. Marital property is defined as any debt or asset that accumulated during the course of the marriage. The marriage is defined as beginning on the date that you get married and it ends on the date that one of you files for divorce. Sometimes we have a separation agreement that is entered into prior to somebody filing for divorce and in the separation agreement we can agree upon the date that marital property stopped accumulating.
